Been out of Industry for a while need to rebuild your confidence and skills this course combines demonstration and practical workshops to refresh and recap on the fundamental classics of cutting with hand-on-guidance. 

Course Content

A firm understanding of the key basics of cutting is essential. Cutting is the perfect building block to becoming a skilled and competent stylist.This inspiring introduction to the world of cutting looks at identifying your client’s style potential, and selecting the right styles to give them the perfect result. Included in the course are the following elements:

• Consultation and after care advice
• Health and safety
• Basic cutting techniques, club cutting, point cutting, slicing, freehand and scissor over comb.
• Use and selection of products

• This knowledge teamed with an insight into fashion cutting will not only add skills, but also earning potential.

Entry Requirements

NVQ Level 1,2 qualification in Hairdressing or a minimum of 3 years experience.

Equipment Requirements

You will be required to find models for your practical assessments, who will be expected to contribute to the cost of consumables.

Progression

After completing this course you will have the opportunity to develop further.  Courses available are NVQ Level 2 leading to L3 and University.

You complete 4 core units:

• Follow health and safety in the salon
• Client consultation for hair services
• Shampoo and condition the hair and scalp.

You also choose optional units (usually 2-4) from:

• Promote products and services to clients in a salon
• Colour and lighten hair

VRQ qualifications are assessed at work or in a realistic working environment. For each unit your assessor observes you carrying out different services and checks your understanding, this information will be recorded in your log book, which then provides formal evidence of your learning.

For a Barbering VRQ, you will do hairdressing practice, learn the knowledge required and organise your own study - you'll record your achievements in a logbook packed with hints and tips from industry experts.

Progression

A Barbering qualification will enable you to seek employment within the Hairdressing Industry, and with the higher levels you could become a top stylist and go on to be a salon manager or travel the world.

If attending full time, it would be an advantage to have a salon work experience placement within a hairdressing salon while you attend this course.

A full kit is required (approx. £60 and/or a mannequin head (£17.00), and a theory book.  You will be required to wear suitable salon wear, which consists of black tunic top, black salon trousers and black salon shoes.  Hair for hair extensions will also be required if taking the optional unit of Hair extensions.  You will be required to purchase enough hair for two full heads of hair extensions.  The cost of the hair is approx. £150.  You will also be required to purchase text books.  S/NVQ Level 3 Hairdressing with Barbering (By Gilly Ford/Helen Stewart ISBN 0-435-45647-4) is required for this course.

Assessment

Within the course structure there are four areas of continuous assessment - practical, oral questioning, assignments and a written test paper.  On completion, the assessment will be retained in a portfolio and used for evidence for your qualification.

Progression

Subject to successful completion of the course, you may progress to University, including a variety of Make Up and Hair Design degree courses on offer at Southampton Solent University.  Alternatively you can apply for work in hotel salons, on a cruise ship, or even set up your own mobile hairdressing business.

This course will give you the opportunity to develop and update your technical skills in advanced colouring, colour correction, hair extension, advanced perming & cutting, and long hair.  This course will give you an insight into the financial responsibility of running a business.  The necessary skills for this qualification will be learnt through a variety of situations, in a commercial salon and in theory lessons.  It is a practical course, which is underpinned by a theoretical background.  Within the course structure there are four areas of assessment.  They are; practical observation, oral questioning, assignments/case studies and written test papers.  Students will need to pass all four areas of assessment.  On completion, all assessments will be retained in a portfolio and used as evidence to show an external examiner.

Course Content

The mandatory units which must be covered are to ensure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety, promote additional products or services to clients, provide hairdressing consultation services, create a variety of looks using a combination of cutting techniques.  Optional units are develop and enhance your creative hairdressing skills, style and dress hair to achieve a variety of creative looks, style and dress long hair, provide colour correction services, perm hair using a variety of techniques, colour hair using a variety of techniques, the application and maintenance of hair extensions, contribute to the financial effectiveness of the business, and contribute to the planning and implementation of promotional activities.

Entry Requirements

You must have successfully completed Hairdressing NVQ Level 2, or possess an equivalent qualification to study at this level.  Entry criteria for mature students can be discussed at interview.  It should be noted that a good standard of physical health is required as hairdressing is often physically demanding, and this type of work may affect certain skin conditions.

If attending full time, it would be an advantage to have a salon work experience placement within a hairdressing salon while you attend this course.

Equipment Requirements

A full kit is required (approx. £60 and/or a mannequin head (£17.00), and a theory book. There is a charge of £30.00 for consumables to be paid at the first session on the course.

You will be required to wear suitable salon wear, which consists of black tunic top, black salon trousers and black salon shoes.  Hair for hair extensions will also be required if taking the optional unit of Hair extensions.  You will be required to purchase enough hair for two full heads of hair extensions.  The cost of the hair is approx. £150.  You will also be required to purchase text books.  S/NVQ Level 3 Hairdressing with Barbering (By Gilly Ford/Helen Stewart ISBN 0-435-45647-4) is required for this course.

Assessment

Within the course structure there are four areas of continuous assessment - practical, oral questioning, assignments and a written test paper.  On completion, the assessment will be retained in a portfolio and used for evidence for your qualification.

Progression

Subject to successful completion of the course, you may progress to University, including a variety of Make Up and Hair Design degree courses on offer at Southampton Solent University.  Alternatively you can apply for work in hotel salons, on a cruise ship, or even set up your own mobile hairdressing business.

Attendance - One Year, Full Time If you are under 19 at the start of the course, and studying a full time course, there are no tuition / exam fees.If you are over 19, you are liable for tuition / exam fees – please contact Student Service.

Part time student will attend Tuesday and Thursday evening.
