About the Course

This is aimed at those who wish to gain insight into Learning Disabilities.  It will look at the various types of learning disabilities, numbers and who are affected by various conditions.  The care that is provided in a holistic way using person centred approaches is explored.  This is for those with little or no background in learning disabilities in care but who may wish to develop their skills to have a career in the care sector. 

Course Content

Learners will develop their knowledge in the field of Learning Disabilities in the following areas:

History of Learning Disabilities; Legislation and Frameworks; Carers and Support Roles; Types of Conditions with causes, signs and symptoms.  Benefits and Support available. 

Learning will be through a range of activities and exercises to develop knowledge and understanding of this subject.  Learners will benefit from exchanging information, knowledge and experience from each other.

No formal qualifications are required.  This is aimed at those who wish to embark on a career in the care field, a career changer or someone who wants to learn more about the field of learning disabilties.  Some family members or carers may want to understand more about certain conditions to enable them to provide a more active and productive role.

Some prefer to read and look at visual material known as visual learners, others will rather listen to spoken words or music that conveys a message. We refer to them as auditory learners. Many learners who want to work in a practical setting are `hands on` or are referred to tactile kinaesthetic learners. Through a simple activity and questionnaire we identify the preferred style and as teachers it informs the way in which we deliver our lessons to encompass all the different learning styles. After all, you may be equally more than one and lessons that underpin knowledge need to appeal to the way in which you learn to maximise your potential to internalise all the information that is presented to you. There are lots of ways to help you including a software programme used here at City College. It is called ClaroRead and it enables you to change the colour of the font, the background, the size of the text and many other features. For those of you who want to proof read your work, there is a function that will read back your work to you! Just one of many exciting ways that we use to help you to learn and retain that information.  

Equipment Requirements

Writing materials will be required and a folder to store information.  The course tutor will provide resources on the day and over the two sessions.  Students can also purchase USB Memory Sticks from the College shop if they wish to use laptops.  The College has a Wi-Fi system that operates across the Campus.

Assessment

There is no examination and no assignment.  You will be asked to evaluate the session for Quality Improvement purposes.  Assessment of learning is continuous throughout the learning experience and sharing of experience is valuable particularly among adult learners who have experience in various fields.  There will also be an opportunity to ask questions and clarify understanding of the topic with your tutor.

Progression

This is an Awareness session.  Learners can undertake programmes in this department from level 1 upwards to 2, 3, HNC level 5 and HE.  Please enquire for more information or come to one of our Open Events.  We also offer Awareness Sessions in other subjects such as Dementia and End of Life Care.  Please check this website for updates or come into the College main campus and pick up a prospectus.

About the Course

This is a short 3 hour awareness session about Dementia to get carers, family members and the public at large to start talking to one another and become aware of the need for a greater understanding of Dementia and how this impacts on lives of individuals and their extended families.  It is a growing issue for the NHS with numbers of elderly people increasing and extended periods of care and understanding needed in the 21st Century. We will run the Awareness session on a roll on roll off basis.  Come and enrol and once we have a minimum of ten enrolled we will run the course.  Dates/times throughout the year.  We can deliver in your place of work as well as College.

Course Content

This is an awareness session and as such requires individuals to participate in group discussions and other classroom activities to raise their awareness.  Dementia is a growing concern worldwide with the statistics expected to more than treble worldwide by the second half of this century.  During the session you will learn about:

Dementia causes.  Facts and figures about Dementia.  Who is affected by this condition.  Personal experience and stories.  What can we do as individuals or carers?

Dimche Milosovski

Dimche was working in a voluntary capacity at Southampton General, as he was an immigrant just arrived from Macedonia, and was not allowed to work until he received a work permit from the Home Office.

He enrolled for the Level 1 H&SC course and soon proved himself to be a very capable student who just needed some support with English written and verbal work.

Dimche worked hard throughout the course and was a joy to teach, interested committed and always completed work on time, due to his hard work he has achieved Level 1 H&SC certificate which supported his application for employment.

Entry Requirements

There is no formal qualification required to attend this awareness session, just a willingness to share information and learn more about the condition with others who will probably have their own story to tell about this.  You can enrol in peron at one of our many open events, in person or online.  You will not need an interview.  This is a roll on roll off basis and will run with 10 students minimum on dates through the year either daytime or evening.  Please state your preference when enrolling.  Check local press for our next event to come along and enrol or you can pop in at other times as there is no interview required.

All learners are expected to bring writing materials.  Wi-Fi equipment is in place across the College to enable those with laptops to access the Internet.  Memory sticks are available to purchase at the College.  Those on a mandatory work placement need to wear polo shirts with College log which can also be purchased from the College shop. There wlll be handouts provided during the session.  Many students like to use I Pads and our IT Department can help you to set this up to work in the College.

Assessment

There is no formal assessment although you will receive a College Certificate for attendance.  Activities will allow you to self assess and be observed, have discussions and other classroom learning to help you understand the concepts.  You will have the opportunity to discuss your next steps for progression in your learning to an accredited course with one of a number of awarding bodies including City and Guilds.  Please ask for details when you enrol. When you progress to an accredited course you will need to be assessed for competence, usually in the workplace to determine that you have good practice.

Progression

You may progress to a certificated course with City and Guilds for Dementia at level 2 and/or 3.  Learners often enrol on other related courses.  We currently run from levels 1 through to 5 and Foundation Degree in this department.  Come along to one of our open evenings or events to find out more. We run these throughout the year.  See local press or our website for details.  You may wish to find out more about other types of courses that we have.  We work closely with a lot of employers so you may progress onto an apprenticeship.  Please ask for details next time you are at City College.

About the Course

This is a one day course which can also be delivered over two evenings.  It is aimed at carers of those who are approaching end of life and who need specialist care.  Most palliative care is provided in a hospitce that are run by doctors, nurses, social workers, counsellors and trained volunteers. They are smaller and quieter than a hospital setting and have a 'home' feel about them.  They provide individual care more suited to the person in a gentler and calmer atmosphere.  Hopsice care is usually based on a hospice referral through the person's GP, hospital doctor or district nurse. 

Some people can benefit as much from palliative care in the home as they do in a hospice.  Hospice staff are often on call for 24 hours a day and can visit at home.  Macmillan nurses provide such care in the home.  This awareness session will provide information and signposting whilst giving the student an opportunity to meet others who share similar situations and experiences.

Course Content

This course is delivered on the Main College Campus.  This short awareness course will look at the following: What is Palliative Care?  Who can access?  Carers roles.  Funding and Benefits.  Support Networks.  Services in the local area. Palliative Care is also known as End of Life Care.  There will be a Certificate of Attendance for this course.  The content can be delivered in more depth to organisations on a Bespoke basis on request.  Please contact the College and ask to meet with our Business Development Officer to discuss your needs.

There are no formal entry requirements, just a willingness to participate and learn about this important area of Care.  This is open to anyone from any background or age group. From the experience of the teaching staff, by attending short courses students have the opportunity to meet new people, make new friends and maybe even expand their network of those in similar situations if they are already carers.  Not only do students gain valuable skills, many of our students on short courses go onto accredited courses and gain qualifications.

There is no exam or assignment for this course as it is an Awareness raising session.  You will assess your own learning and be amazed at what you have gained by the end of the session through both the delivery and working with others.  We continually strive to improve our courses and offer new programmes of learning and therefore students will be asked to evaluate the session for quality improvement purposes.  If you would like to see a course that we don't currently offer please discuss your ideas and look at the possibilities if there is sufficient interest.

Progression

Equipment Requirements

Students should bring writing materials although resources are provided for all students who enrol on the programme.  USB memory sticks are available to purchase from the College shop.  Laptops can be used once the IT department have been informed and a password issued for use of College systems.  The College has wi-fi facilities available throughout the campus.  We have a small amount of recycled folders that students can request on a first come first serve basis.  During the First Aid awareness it is advisable to wear comfortable shoes and clothing i.e. trainers and jogging bottoms. 

Assessment

This is a tailored course and learners are continually assessed throughout the four days. It is therefore essential that all four days are completed to enable learners to thoroughly understand all processes and procedures as well as develop their knowledge and understanding. A College Certificate will be issued on completion of the course.

Progression

The College offers a comprehensive range of learning programmes to suit all levels and needs. Within the Health and Social Care and Early Years Department there is a wide range of programmes that we offer and are continually updating and changing to suit the needs of the industry and the requirements of our long list of satisfied employers. We offer a level 1 programme for those who have not worked in the industry before, have been recently made redundant, are unemployed or are looking for a career change, level 2 for those in the industry who need the diploma for their job role, level 3 for those normally in a supervisory position and level 5 for leadership and management. There will be further courses introduced from the new academic year in September 2012 so please check this site regularly for updates. Interviews are not normally required at level 1. Level 2 applicants need to demonstrate they are either working in the industry or have a regular voluntary position for at least 10 hours a week and level 3 and above must have an interview to satisfy that they meet the criteria and are working in an appropriate role to produce the evidence for an assessor to observe in the workplace.

We continually update our courses and this particular course has been tailored so that it can be delivered in a short timeframe to allow learners to be out of the workplace for the minimal time needed to ensure they complete this valuable course. The course is aimed at adults who have been made redundant, want a career change or wish to return to employment after a career break.  The Care Industry is a fast growing sector which demands a minimum of a level 2 qualification to work within it.  This can be a barrier to many without a job or appropriate experience just trying to get the first 'foot on the ladder'.  Level 2 programmes require that candidates have a job or work placement to enable assessments to be carried out to determine the competence of the individual.  At Level 1 this programme is unique in that it offers the insight into the Care Industry without the need to have a work placement.  However, during the course, candidates will have opportunity to meet other people, develop their knowledge and skills as well as improve their employability to progress further.  We can take people on to a Level 2 programme as long as they have a regular work pattern with an employer.  This could be an agency which involve part time hours but needs to be regular work and clients over a period of time.   Too often people lack even the most basic of skills in order to make that happen.  Therefore, this course could be for you if you are unemployed.  This course is eligible for European Social Funding.  This course will incorporate employability skills, CV writing, meeting potential employers for work tasters that may lead into employment.   Please enquire to see if you are eligible.  You may be eligible for free funding from Training Works if you do not have a level 2 qualification and you are currently in work.  Next Course for 2013 is Wednesday 1st May!

Course Content

4333-10 Level 1 Award in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care will be delivered in 7 sessions.  The first session will consist of an Induction, tour of the College, advice about learning support, assessment of literacy and numeracy.  The following five sessions cover the units which are:

128 Introduction to the adult social care sector credit value 1

129 Introduction to the values and principles of adult social care credit value 1

130 Awareness of the skills and attitudes needed to work in adult social care credit value 1

131 Awareness of communication in adult social care credit value 2

132 Awareness of the role and responsibilities of the adult social care worker credit value 1

We have had a lot of success as learners have progressed from this level to attain work or work experience and have progressed to levels 2, 3 and beyond.  Those who attend regularly develop their skills, gain confidence and feel able to approach organisations for voluntary work.  Watch this space for individual stories of those who complete this and take up other opportunities.

Entry Requirements

No entry requirements.  This course is aimed at the unemployed who wish to gain a qualification to be able to work in the Adult Care sector. This is also advantageous to those who do not have a job or voluntary work as a work placement at this level is not required. However, learners can use the experience to gain access to a range of volunteer opportunities as a progression route.  Many learners will gain employment as a direct result of this course through networking with other learners and accessing employers.

VERY IMPORTANT! Whilst there are no formal entry requirements, we expect candidates to commit to the duration of this programme to ensure that they maximise their learning experience.  Those that miss any sessions will find it difficult to complete the workbook.

Learning Style

All sessions are delivered taking into account differing learning styles.  Whether you are visual, auditory or a tactile kinaesthetic learner you will have a variety of teaching methods to enable you to learn by your preferred style.  The College use a software package called Claro read that enables you to change text size and colour as well as background.  This also has a voice activated facility that can read text back to you in a range of formats - just some of the ways you can be supported to achieve regardless of your ability, background or previous qualifications.

Equipment Requirements

You will need to bring a pen and paper if you wish to take notes and a folder to store your work.  You will also have access to computers where all your resources for this course will be held electronically and which you can access from the College or home.  Your work will be assignment based.  There are no exams required. 

Assessment

All assessment is assignment based.  You will continually be assessed in the classroom through a range of activities that include: discussions, question and answer sessions, peer and self assessment, observation, case studies, practical exercises and finally your assignment. From 2013 this course will be delivered on a weekly basis on a every six weeks.  Any work submitted to your tutor will result in constructive feedback to help you develop your skills, confidence and knowledge.  There are no exams.

Progression

You will meet new people who, like you, want to work in the Care field.  Learning new skills opens doors and this will increase your confidence and ability to look for paid or voluntary work in the Care sector that can lead into full or part time employment.  There are diplomas and apprenticeships available.  This information will be available to you on your Induction day.  Please also look at the extent of courses on offer on this website. 

The next course level is Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care.  This will require you to be in a paid position within the sector to enable work setting assessment to take place.  Those who complete a level 1 course will feel more confident in their abilities and newly developed skills to be able to approach organisations to undertake paid or voluntary work.  However, it is paid work with an employer that will allow asssessment to take place as the full role of a support worker would not be achieved on a voluntary basis.  However, voluntary work is a good stepping stone into paid work which then provides eligibility for doing a level 2 qualification.

Learners who attend Induction and every teaching session are those who gain the most from the experience.  City College has undergone £48 million worth of improvements, new buildings and facilities.  This is an excellent place to learn and you will be in a learning environment that suits your needs with friendly staff who will support you throughout your learning journey. For those with a learning difficulty or who prefer different sized fonts and backgrounds to assist with reading text on-screen there is a software package called ClaroRead that enables this as well as a facility for reading back text. All students once enrolled will have access to a range of resources on CityBit. Tutors will update resources regularly with information that is both informative and for general interest or to encourage further reading.

Please Note: This course will only run if there are a minimum of ten learners. Should there be insufficient numbers then the date for the programme will be deferred. Please come into the College to enrol. You do not need an interview to be accepted onto the course, just the willingness to commit for one morning a week for seven weeks and meet other people who want to achieve as well.

Enrolment Instructions

Please come into the College to enrol.  There is no formal interview to undertake this course.  Course Induction will be on the first date you are in College, followed by five teaching sessions and a final hand in date.  You need to bring proof of your identity and status if you are on benefits and/or unemployed to establish whether you have entitlement to any remission of fees.   You will meet your Tutor and receive the course information in more detail on the first day during Induction.  Please arrive at 9.15am on the day of induction and you will be met by your tutor who will accompany you to the classroom. 

Learners may be eligible for funding under specific criteria through 'Training Works'.  Those without a prior level 2 qualification may qualify.  Please enquire for details.

About the Course

This will be a new course in terms of accreditation by an awarding body - City and Guilds.  The aim is to deliver this during the evenings on alternate weeks so the programme can run two sessions back to back.  You will learn about key issues with dementia that effect both individuals and their families.  Those who complete this programme may be interested in other short courses or longer accredited programmes.

The course will be assessed through a series of workbooks.  There will be no formal examination.  Opportunity to ask questions and share expereinces enhances the learning experience for many of our learners or those returning to study.  You will be asked to evaluate the programme at the end for Quality purposes.

Progression

Learners can progress to a Certificate in Awareness.  This qualification also maps to the Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care.  Completion of either the Award or Certificate can progress to employment or to the following City and Guilds qualifications:

About the Course

This course has been devised to respond to the needs of employers who want to have their staff aware in the field of dementia without having to release them from the workplace.  It focuses on the essential factors that staff need to be aware of when working with those with dementia.  It can be tailored to the needs of the organisation and delivered in-house which reduces time spent away from the residents.  Workbooks will be used for this course as learners can undertake independent learning in addition to the underpinning knowledge delivered by the tutor.  It can be delivered over several days or extended to a longer period of learning according to the needs of the employee role and responsibilities as well as the organisational needs.

The key content for this Bespoke course covers: Understand what dementia is; Understand key features of the theoretical models of dementia; Know the most common types of dementia and their causes; Understand factors relating to an individual's experience of dementia.  Within this terminology, key functions of the brain and links to depression are explored.  Models of dementia are outlined, causes, signs, symptons and risk factors are all discussed.  Individual experiences of living with this condition are described and the impact that attitudes and behaviours of others on the individual with dementia will be considered.

Learners will be assessed according to the City and Guilds criteria.  The tutor will mark the work book which will be provided to all learners who will be expected to complete and independently do further research for their qualification as well as continued professional development.

This course is aimed at a diverse range of job roles and occupational areas across al lservice user groups and ages, working in statutory (including NHS), private and voluntary agencies.  This would be suitable for anyone aged 16 or older, who have an interest in operating in a caring role for older people.  This course is developed to help meet the dementia strategies for the UK and so improve health and care services supporting individuals diagnosed with dementia.  Typically roles would include care assistnats/support workers/key workers in residential settings as well as healthcare assistants/support workers in community and primary care environments or acute health environments.  Additionally family support workers and personal assistants employed directly by the individual they support or their families.

Entry Requirements

No formal entry requirements are needed but to provide the evidence for this qualification you will need to be working in a health and social care setting whether paid or voluntary and the assessor will need to be able to access your workplace to be able to make assessments.  You should also have completed your Induction and preferably have been in post for six months.

We welcome those with and without qualifications and those who have made a career change to work in this sector.

Learning Style

We recognise that learners have different ways to learn and for some that can be visually whilst others prefer to listen.  The more practical among you will prefer to have the 'hands-on' experience and so we select different teaching methods and activities to ensure everyone learns at their own pace and which is compatible with their learning style.  To support your learning we also have available on all of our computers accessible to students, a software package which enables you to enlarge text, change fonts, colours, backgrounds and even talk to you!  Claro Read - it's a great tool to assist in your learning.  This information is provided during your Induction.

Equipment Requirements

You will need to produce a level arch sized portfolio of work and need to bring paper and pens to class to make notes where necessary.  You will be able to access all the computer equipment onsite which includes our Intranet and CityBit where your resources will be accessible.  Claro -Read is available on all our student PCs.

Assessment

Your tutor will give you an assignment to test your understanding and knowledge of important aspects of your job such as legislation, policies, procedures to ensure you have the theory which underpins the job you do.  You will hand in your assignment each month until you have completed the course.  A series of workshops for the Pathways will offer a number of units.  Your assessor will determine your competence in the workplace ensuring you are a safe practitioner.  There are no exams for this qualification.

To achieve the Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care (Adults) for England (4222-21), Learners must achieve a minimum of 46 credits.  This is achieved as follows:

You need to have for the Generic Pathway:

• 24 credits from the mandatory units in Group A
• a minimum of 2 credits and a maximum of 7 credits from the optional units in Group B
• at least 15 credits from the optional units in Group C

You then need from the Dementia Pathway:

• 24 credits from the mandatory units in Group A
• a minmum of 2 credits and a maximum of 7 credits from the optional untis in Group B but must complete: DEM 201 Dementia Awareness
• at least 15 credits from the optional units in Group C but one of the following must be completed: DEM 204, DEM 209, DEM 210 or DEM 211

For the Adults with Learning Disabilities Pathway you need:

• 24 credits from the mandatory units in Group A
• a minimum of 2 credits and a maximum of 7 credits from the optional units in Group B but must complete: LD 201 Understand the context of supporting an individual with learning disabiltieis
• at least 15 credits from the optional units in Group C but one of the following must be completed: LD 202, LD 203

Progression

Once you have completed your Diploma there is plenty of scope for you to undertake more units as part of your continuing professional development (CPD).  With a unique learning number that an employer can access with your permission, all your achievements which are stored on a national database will be visible and show a prospective employer your achievements.  We also deliver bespoke or specialist programmes tailored to client groups e.g. dementia, learning disabilities, mental to suit employers' needs.  Please enquire or look for updates on this website.

Many of you will want to develop and progress onto a level 3 qualification when your role changes or if you want to develop your skills further to be able to change job roles.  We offer both the level 3 and the new hybrid level 5 Diploma in for those in managerial roles or aspiring to become managers.

About the Course

This course is aimed at those who work in the Care field and who have some knowledge of Dementia and want to improve this knowledge and gain a qualification.  There are 4 mandatory units to undertake plus a choice from the optional units for a further 6 units making a total of 21 credits minimum.  As with many of our courses this can be delivered on a Bespoke basis in the workplace at a time to suit.  Please ask our Business Development Officer to discuss your needs if you are an employer.

Entry Requirements

This is for those in a range of job roles and occupational areas across all service user groups and ages, working in statutory (including NHS), private and voluntary agencies.  This would be suitable for anyone aged 16 or older, who have an interest in operating in a caring role for older people.  Please enquire in person, on-line or by visiting the College at one of our many open events throughout the year.

Learning styles determine the best way in which you learn. Some prefer to read and look at visual material known as visual learners, others will rather listen to spoken words or music that conveys a message. We refer to them as auditory learners. Many learners who want to work in a practical setting are `hands on` or are referred to tactile kinaesthetic learners. Through a simple activity and questionnaire we identify the preferred style and as teachers it informs the way in which we deliver our lessons to encompass all the different learning styles. After all, you may be equally more than one and lessons that underpin knowledge need to appeal to the way in which you learn to maximise your potential to internalise all the information that is presented to you. There are lots of ways to help you including a software programme used here at City College. It is called ClaroRead and it enables you to change the colour of the font, the background, the size of the text and many other features. For those of you who want to proof read your work, there is a function that will read back your work to you! Just one of many exciting ways that we use to help you to learn and retain that information.

Equipment Requirements

Students should bring writing materials and folders to keep work in.  There are Wi-Fi facilities in the College for students to be able to access if they wish to use their own laptops.  Our IT Helpdesk will help with this on request.  Our College shop stocks USB sticks and other stationery items for purchase. 

Assessment

Learners will be assessed in the workplace by an assessor and through written assignments.  Candidates will need to ensure they are in the role when observed in their workplace setting as they will need to demonstrate their competency.

Progression

Candidates can progress to Working in Community Mental Health Care.  This also maps to the Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care.  We also run an HNC in Health and Social Care which is a level 4 qualification and level 5 Leadership and Management for Registered Managers and Deputies working in the role.

You need to be working as a senior carer/team leader to be able to gather evidence - usually supervisory.  This should include care planning responsibilities/administration of medication/liaise with multi-disciplinary teams.  Please discuss with your employer if unsure.  You will need to have an interview either face to face or over the telephone.

About the Course

This exiting new qualification can be studied JUST ONE DAY a week for one year. Cost for the course will be £2350.00 for a one year programme. This programme is designed for those who want to develop their knowledge in Health and Social Care.  This will enable learners to progress in their organisation and improve their ability to move onto Higher Education.  Work experience of at least 200 hours will be expected as a mandatory requirement to pass the course.  This can be voluntary or paid work for those already in employment in an appropriately related work area. Learners can fund themselves in a number of ways including a Career Development Loan and Adult Learning through Learn Direct.  Information about these schemes is available from the College.  Learners are expected to produce a work journal and reflective diary which will need to be completed and signed by an appropriate manager or supervisor from the work setting.  Hours will be recorded and monitored through an allocated workplace mentor.  There will be a variety of teaching staff who have expertise in different areas to both teach and guide you through the programme.

There are 7 mandatory core units each with a credit value of 15.  The units are as follows:

1 Communicating in Health and Social Care Organisations

2 Principles of Health and Social Care Practice (this is level 5)

3 Health and Safety in the Health and Social Care Workplace

12 Physiological Principles for Health and Social Care

In addition there will be a further specialist unit with a 15 credit value to be advised by the tutor.

Entry Requirements

Learners will normally be working in the Health and Social Care Sector, or have finished a programme of study and wish to work part time but be able to progress onto Higher Education without having to go to University. Those candidates who have not been accepted for University this year or who have changed their mind will be considered. This course offers the benefits of HE study whilst allowing the learner to work part time, counting the work experience towards the hours required for this course. We would expect learners to have completed a level 3 programme i.e. BTEC Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care with a good result of at least a merit.   An A level or 2 AS levels in appropriate subjects will be considered or equivalent qualifications.  Ideally candidates should have 5 GCSEs at A-C level or equivalent although more importantly for those who do wish to progress to HE will need to have English and Maths GCSE at C level or above.  An interview and screening process will take place during the summer months.  An expression of interest can be made to the College and arrangements for interview to be advised.  Candidates will be expected to attend a mandatory induction day prior to starting the course.  Please check this website for updates.

A folder to gather a port folio of evidence which will be required, stationery items and a lap top can be used with our Wi-Fi equipment. Memory USB sticks are available from the College Shop.  Laptops can be brought in for student's use - our IT department will advise on passwords to access relevant programmes.  All students need to be able to access the Internet outside of their timetabled programme.

Assessment

This is a new programme for academic year 2012 - 13.  Learners will need to provide evidence in their portfolios and assessment is continuous.  Formative feedback will be given by the tutor and learners can continually improve in their study.  There are also strategies in place to help candidates in their learning programmes through a range of software programmes including Claro Read which is detailed in Learning Styles - details about this software available during enrolment.  All work is moderated internally and scrutinised by the awarding body for this qualification, Edexcel.

Progression

Learners may opt to go onto University or use the opportunity to further their career in their organisations.  City College has good links with HE Institutions as well as employers.  Please visit the College to find out what the possiblities are for your career development.

Additional Information

This is a new programme which will run on a Friday on dates as advertised.  Times will be 9.00 - 5.00 on Friday to include rolling tutorials on a rota basis at the end of the afternoon.   The day will include a lunch period and opportunities for independent research using the College's extensive resources.  The facilities available include, cafe, restaurant, hair and beauty salons, theatre.  The College has ongoing provision for functions both during the week and weekends.  Please enquire for details about hiring the faciltiies.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must be aged 19+ and have a level 3 qualification and needs to be in the role of manager/assistant, manager and deputy or manager or senior carer.  They should be responsible for team meetings and supervisions.  As this is a unique course which promotes best practice and works at a higher level than previous qualifications, it is essential that candidates are prepared for the commitment of the course and meet the criteria for entry.  An interview by a member of the Health and Social Care Team will be required prior to entry to determine the appropriateness of the candidate and to ensure they are working at the right level to undertake this programme of study.  Individuals are welcome and Employers who wish their staff to complete the programme in order to meet industry needs.  Candidates from differing backgrounds contribute to the richness of the learning experience so those working across all sectors of the health and social care field are encouraged to apply for a place.

Learning Style

All learners will attend an Induction Day in which they will undertake a range of skills tests to determine the level at which they are working and to identify any support needs that they might have.  On this day the learners will identify their learning styles - an important tool that assists tutors to differentiate in the learning environment.  Some learners prefer conventiional methods of underpinning knowledge delivery which can be visual, auditory or a combination of both.  Others may prefer a more practical hands-on approach (tactile/kinaesthetic). There is a software package available on College PCs called Claro read that enables the learner to change colours, size, background, fonts and allows text to be read back for proof reading purposes. If you have a learning difficulty or believe you would benefit from this software please ask the Programme Leader during your interview for more details.

Equipment Requirements

All learners will be required to provide a portfolio of work which will require a lever arch folder and a separate folder for handouts and other resources.  Stationery items such as pens, notepads, pencils, erasers, rulers, calculators should be produced by the learner.  PCs are provided in the College although personal laptops can be used as there is Wi-Fi facility available. Memory sticks can be purchased from the College shop.

Assessment

All learners are allocated a named assessor on the Induction day.  A combination of written work, observations, witness testimonies, oral questions, professional discussion are all used in gathering evidence to culminate in the final qualification.  Teaching and assessment works most effectivey with tutor/assessor/employer/learner working in partnership together.

Appointments will be made by assessors on the days when leaners attend College.  The structure of the course is such to maximise the time and efforts put in by all concerned.  Observations will take place in the work place to assess competence.  Knowledge will be tested through a combination of methods including written assignments.

Progression

These qualifications replace the current Level 4 NVQ in Leadership and Management for Care Services and the Level 4 NVQ in Health and Social Care, which are accepted as entry requirements to a number of HEI programmes. These qualifications will be the accepted qualification for registration and regulation where appropriate and can demonstrate continuing professional development.
