About the Course

The level 2 Award in Make up a short bit size course which focuson improving and maintaining facial skin conditions to include skin exfoliation, skin warming, comedone extraction, facial massage, mask treatments and the use of facial products. To carry out this unit the learner will need to maintain effective health, safety and hygiene procedures.

Course Content

This course covers the theory and application of facial skin care treatments and all make-up techniques.  It will teach you how to apply make-up for different face shapes and different occasions. You will also learn about the skin anatomy of physiology and related business units. You will need to provide models for this course.

Students will gain the industry skills to carry out skin care techniques and make-up to a professional level, as well as learning how to give advice to clients in a store, or as a service in beauty therapy.

Entry Requirements

This course is designed for over 19’s.  Ideally all applications require a good standard of education in English, Maths and Science GCSE's A-D or the equivalent, and candidates who have successfully completed a Level 1 Beauty course with a satisfactory reference and skills assessment. 

Learner from the EU or who have been previous ESOL students will require a good standard of spoken English (Level 1 or above) so they can hold a conversation with our wide client base. 

It should be noted that a good standard of physical health is required as beauty is often physically demanding, and this type of work may affect certain skin conditions. 

A short interview is required by every learners before starting this course and enrolment will be dependent on a successful outcome.

A mixture of practical and written assignments Students will need to submit portfolio demonstrating practical evidence and essential knowledge via assignments and tests.

You are required to research information for your assignments in your own time, and practise your practice skills at home. (Approximately 10 hours of study per week plus practical)

Progression

You may progress onto working in beauty salons, cruise ships or health clubs. Alternatively you can continue your training by gaining entry onto the level 3 Massage, General Beauty Therapy, Nail (technician) services or Make-up courses.

This short course has been designed by City and Guilds for Beauty Therapist  wanting to take a bite size course to develop or update their technical skills  at Level 3  in Intimate waxing  and  gain a  national qualification. 

You may be working as a Therapist carrying out intimate waxing without a national qualification,if so this is the idea course for you. !!!!

Course Content

The course will cover the three type of waxing techniques used when carrying out intimate waxing Hollywood, Brazilian and Playboy. The course will also cover health and safety ,consultation ,contra-indications and function of the skin and hair growth cycle.

You will be assessed in two of the three techniques.

This course is designed for over 19’s.  Ideally all applications require a good standard of education in English, Maths and Science or the equivalent, or candidates who have successfully completed a Level 1 Beauty course with a satisfactory reference and skills assessment. Learner from the EU or who have been previous ESOL students will require a good standard of spoken English so they can hold a conversation with our wide client base. Plus Level 2 Beauty Therapy qualification or an equivalent qualification in a Beauty related subject.  This is necessary as you will need to produce an assignment and take a written question papers to complete the course.It should be noted that a good standard of physical health is required as beauty is often physically demanding, and this type of work may affect certain skin conditions.

You will be required to wear beauty salon uniform, which consists of a Black tunic and trousers and black salon shoes.  You may already have a uniform and therefore you will not need to order from Le Beeby.

You will also be required to bring your beauty therapy kit.

To re enforce underpinning knowledge students are encouraged to participate in student led activities within the class, complete one assignment  and case studies to produce a portfolio of evidence which is submitted to City and Guilds. All methods are selected to meet the levels and ability of each individual student.

Progression

You may want to progress by adding to your industry skills by attending other level 3 short  courses in stone therapy, reflexology, self tanning, Epilation, micro-dermabrasion or progress onto the level 4 higher professional diploma in technical salon management.

Learning Style

The necessary skills for this qualification will be learnt through a variety of situations these will include working in our commercial salons Kudos, and with the media and photography department. There is also be a number of trips to enhance your learning experience.

Theory lessons are taught through a varity of methods from classroom, independent study, on line resources through our Visual Learning Environment VLE.

Due to health and Safety regulations all students are required to purchase and wear in all practical sessions a full uniform which consists of the following: polo shirt, Trousers and closed toed shoes. Please note that these are purchased through the college suppliers to ensure a high standard of presentation in Kudos Hair and Beauty Salons.

Assessment

Assessment will be done in a realistic working environment, this will include shows and competitions as well as theatre productions, students will therefore need to be prepared to take opportunities where they arise and be able to work both independently and as part of a team. This will be throughout the year on a module/subject basis.

The assessments are graded as pass, merit and distinction.

The theory element will be assessed by way of online exams.

Progression

Students often progress to Higher Education HNDs, Diplomas and Degrees. This qualification will enable you to seek employment within the hair and make-up Industry including television and film, or as a freelance make-up artist. You may wish to further your career with a range of foundation degrees.

• A clean and well pressed uniform
• Clean shoes from La Beeby
• Day make up
• Clean tidy hairstyle   hair should be tied back
• No jewellery except a wedding band
• Short nails which are unvarnished
• No nail extensions
• Facial piercings are to be removed

About the Course

Level 3 Diploma in Hair and Media Make –up is a one year course.

This is an opportunity to learn the skills that will lead you to a career in the exciting world of theatre and film as a make-up artist. When applied effectively, make-up becomes one of the key factors in conveying a sense of drama, whether in film, theatre, photograph or music video. Working hands-on, you will develop the skills to create different looks including fashion, stage and character make-up.

If you have a keen interest in the stage and entertainment industry and are committed, enthusiastic and motivated, or you have just successfully completed Level 2 Hair and Media Make-up, level 2 Beauty Therapy or Level 2 Hairdressing this course is for you.

This course is a demanding course, which is delivered to a strict time-scale. You will need to be a highly motivated individual who can work independently, maximising resources whilst in college and from home in order to complete the practical and theory requirement of the course.

 A deep level of anatomy and physiology underpinning knowledge is required to develop skill, knowledge and expertise therefore self discipline is essential.

Success Story

This is a new course which city college are offering because of the success of our students taking short media make courses and progressing to work in the industry or progressing to university or work as a freelance make -up artist.

Entry Requirements

3 GCSE A-C including English, Maths and Science or a Level 2 beauty therapy qualification or level 2 hair and Media Make –up qualification which can be study at city college

A satisfactory reference detailing, behaviour, attendance and attitude.

Work experience desired.

Learning Style

All methods are selected to meet the levels and ability of each individual student.

Equipment Requirements

You will be required to salon uniform ,during all practical sessions which consists of a navy blue tunic, trousers and salon shoes. Order forms are given to you via the beauty staff.

This amounts to approximately £60.

You will need your full existing L2 kit.

A kit consisting of makeup and hair equipment and products which could cost around £350.

Each student is responsible for purchasing general stationery items including a USB memory stick and text books at approximately £30.

Assessment

Assessments are on a continuous programme of study. To re enforce underpinning knowledge students are encouraged to participate in student led activities within the class, a range of projects combining all aspects of make-up and hair styling  to produce a portfolio of  photographic evidence compiled by you to pass the course and online multi-choices questions.

You will be expected to provide models for your practical assessments and work on external clients.

Progression

You may want to progress by adding to your industry skills by attending part-time courses in various beauty therapy skills. Or progress onto a foundation degree. Or you may choose to work in make-up/T.V studios, theatre companies, cruise ships, health clubs and spas or begin your own business venture as a free lance make up artist.
