About the CourseDedicated 2 day workshop for those interested in designing and crafting glass cabochons. This 2 day course is an introduction to the basics of creating individual and unique glass jewellery by exploring and investigating fusing & slumping techniques. Course ContentWorking with Bullseye glass, Dichoric glass, wire and frits students will learn how to create patterns and textures, focusing on colour and shape. The course also covers glass cutting methods and introductions to kiln firing all through demonstrations set in a creative environment. Pieces will be fired in the kilns overnight so please organise the collection of finished items. Entry RequirementsThere are no entry requirements only enthusiasm and commitment. Learning StyleThis course is a practical hands on experience working in a well equipped studio. Specialist tutors will provide demonstrations and support through the 2 days. Equipment RequirementsAll specialist equipment will be provided. Students will need to bring along pencils, coloured pencils and a sketchbook or paper for planning designs and note taking. About the CourseThis course will cover techniques, equipment and materials relating to film and digital photography. The specialist units covered in this program will begin to prepare you with skills required to develop careers within the photography and related industries, as well as provide a pathway into Higher Education to further your studies.
The college offers both digital and analogue technologies to enable students a wide variety of learning opportunities to ensure a broad base of understanding. Black & white film processing and printing and digital colour using CAD for printing and presentation will be explored during this course within a variety of specialist units, using the specialist large spacious photography studios. Course ContentThis Ed-excel Level 3 BTEC Award in photography comprises two specialist units which will be chosen from the following units, and must be successfully completed to achieve the whole qualification

Four of last years Award students progressed into higher education via the HNC/HND course at City college and another to a Foundation course at The Arts Institute Bournemouth.
Sally Johnson also studied at City College on the National Award in Photography. She now runs her own business taking children’s portraits.
The final shows for the Award were a great success and the level of work high.
One graduate has successfully established her own business whilst another was runner up in a BBC Country file competition.

You will need to have a good level of English GCSE grade C (this is important if going onto University) or the equivalent, plus we prefer a good level of Maths to GCSE C or the equivalent. You will need to demonstrate a strong commitment and interest in Photography and it is advisable that learners seek further advice from the specialist staff before enrolling. Learning StyleClasses take place in specifically designed studios and involve a range of activities including group and individual work. Individuals are encouraged to build on their strengths and develop further in ares for improvement. There is an overarching priority to build confidence and enable students to develop their own creative style. Equipment RequirementsA 35mm film and or digital SLR camera is essential for any student wanting to achieve this qualification. Jessops, and London Camera Exchange are good local providers of new and some second-hand cameras. AssessmentThis program is assessed through coursework submission of all units required. This will require written work and research to be undertaken, but the course is substantially practical based work. ProgressionLocal job opportunities can be taken on successful completion of this course. This can involve local retail, and entry level employment in the photography industry. The course acts as an initial step into the wide and expanding range of art and design activities and opportunities. This could lead to a career (including where required further study at BA, MA and PhD level), in any area of art and design; graphic design, illustration, fine art, fashion, textiles, 3D design, interior design, animation, art history, digital media, curator-ship, art journalism, teaching etc. The scope for potential career destinations within the world of art and design Photography is virtually unlimited. Additional InformationYou will require a folder to store handouts and folio to store and carry images. You will need to provide some basic art equipment as well as your own B&W film. Full details of small equipment will be discussed during the course. Attendance is required for each class for continuity and to enable work to be fully completed. You may wish to do additional work to develop your ideas or work beyond the taught lessons. Whether you are continuing your studies here, returning to education to further your career, or an employer looking to upskill your staff, an HNC/HND offers you a flexible approach.
This is a course that would particularly benefit those with a desire to work in the Creative Arts industry or are currently working within the profession. The course structure is designed to develop the skills and confidence necessary for either vocational or educational progression. You will work within a well structured area of delivery and group development, but will also be encouraged to develop individual practice. You will, of course, be fully supported throughout your time with us, but will also be expected to work and study autonomously in order to gain personal inspiration for your projects.
The aims of the course are to encourage and nurture creative and technical skills in those with a desire to learn skills and knowledge related to Art and Design with a view to progression onto higher education or employment within the field. Prior knowledge will be assessed and existing strengths built on as you develop new skills as the course progresses. Should you wish to progress to further study within HE, your tutors will assist you to produce a portfolio of work for this purpose. The course provides a solid grounding in the disciplines required for effective creative practice including opportunities to work with more traditional design methods, drawing, painting, textiles, fashion, photography, printing, graphics and sculpture/3D methods. You will later be given the opportunity to demonstrate your abilities in a range of techniques, skills and areas of work in a chosen ‘preference’ of Art and Design. The course will culminate in an exhibition which will give you the opportunity to showcase your work in a professional setting to the public, local employers and HE institutions.
Financially an HNC/HND is a far more cost effective than a degree. Given the high level of attainment set for the qualification, it is also considered that a HNC/HND in Art and Design will enable learners to go straight into employment. Part Time HNC. Due to the ongoing growth and success of the full time HNC program we are now offering the course in a part time format for those learners who wish to remain in full time employment. In keeping with the structure of the full time HNC photography course delivery will be designed to develop confidence and technical skills and to help realise individual creative potential.
Although the part time course will allow for a different pace, practice will centre around assignments designed to challenge and encourage students to realise their potential. On a part time basis contact (lectures) will be timetabled into a three hour twilight class 5.00pm until 8.00pm and Saturday morning 10-00am to1.00pm.
Facilities will be available for independent work throughout designated covered time which will include evenings and weekdays. Course ContentLearners studying the Edexcel BTEC Level 4 HNC will be able to develop a portfolio of work which can contribute towards a specialist Photography degree and assist with entry to employment specializing in photography or related areas of industry. You will extend your ability to present, evaluate and interpret qualitative and quantitative data in order to develop lines of argument and make sound judgements in accordance with basic theories and concepts. You will evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to solving problems and communicate the results accurately and reliably with structured and coherent arguments.
Transferable skills necessary for employment are an integral part of this programme. Successful candidates should have the technical knowledge and wider skills to adopt a technical team leader role within their chosen industry. Additional InformationThe present HNC group have developed a small photographic business (Lighthouse Photography) incorporating commercial portraiture and product photography using studio areas and equipment allocated specifically to them. They have completed a number of professional assignments all in keeping with their own subject preference and are working to ensure the business becomes an established area of professional study for future HNC groups.
