Success StoryLouise Illman is a full time mum and when her daughter started school she decided to train to be a nail technician, following the advice from a friend, Louise started college in September 2012, Initially Louise was concerned that she would not fit in, but has found college and course brilliant. Louise successfully completed NVQ level 2 in Nail Services, and has developed her own business and is working successfully freelance. Entry RequirementsWith this course a good standard of English is required to complete the assignment to achieve this qualification. Entry criteria for mature students can be discussed at interview. Ideally all applications require a good standard of education in English, Maths and Science GCSE's A - D or the equivalent, also candidates who have successfully completed a Level 1 Beauty course with a satisfactory reference and skills assessment.
Learner from the EU or who have been previous ESOL students will require a good standard of spoken English (Level 1 or above) so they can hold a conversation with our wide client base. A BKSB screening will take place at interview to support a good level of English required for the course.
It should be noted that a good standard of physical health is required as Beauty is often physically demanding, and this type of work may affect certain skin conditions. This course is designed for over 19’s. A short interview is required by every learners before starting this course. There is a charge of £30.00 for consumables to be paid at the first session on the course. You will be given an order form at your welcome induction by the beauty team. However the Information & Advice Team will also have copies of these forms it is compulsory that you and order before the start of the course.You will be expected to provide models for your practical assessments that will be expected to contribute to the cost of consumables AssessmentAssessments are on a continuous programme of study. To re enforce underpinning knowledge students are encouraged to participate in student led activities within the class, complete work packs and case studies to produce a portfolio of evidence compiled by the student. All methods are selected to meet the levels and ability of each individual student. You are required to revise for your online exams in your own time, and practice your practical skills at home. (Approximately 10 hours of study per week) You will be expected to provide models for your practical assessments that will be expected to contribute to the cost of consumables; however you will also be expected to work on external clients to develop a real working experience. ProgressionYou may progress onto working in beauty salons, cruise ships or health clubs. Success Story
Hannah has been at the college 2 years. She started on the NVQL2 programme. Hannah did not enjoy school but immediately realised that she loved the Beauty industry and quickly knuckled down. Hannah stayed a further year this year to complete her L3 diploma which is due to end in June 13. The great news is that Hannah has secured a Full Time post as a Beauty Therapist at April’s Salon; this has formed part of Hannah’s work experience which is excellent.
Tamara joined the college two years ago after trying out a few different career routes. She struggled to find something that she aspired to become, however things changed once she started her NVQL2 in beauty. The course kept her interested, motivated and encouraged her to focus in an industry that would be able to give her great career prospects. Following her L2 she has completed her L3 Diploma and now has successfully gained employment as a Full Time Beauty Therapist at the ‘White Rooms’ in Southampton, which is fantastic.

About the CourseLevel 3 Diploma in Hair and Media Make –up is a one year course. This is an opportunity to learn the skills that will lead you to a career in the exciting world of theatre and film as a make-up artist. When applied effectively, make-up becomes one of the key factors in conveying a sense of drama, whether in film, theatre, photograph or music video. Working hands-on, you will develop the skills to create different looks including fashion, stage and character make-up. If you have a keen interest in the stage and entertainment industry and are committed, enthusiastic and motivated, or you have just successfully completed Level 2 Hair and Media Make-up, level 2 Beauty Therapy or Level 2 Hairdressing this course is for you. This course is a demanding course, which is delivered to a strict time-scale. You will need to be a highly motivated individual who can work independently, maximising resources whilst in college and from home in order to complete the practical and theory requirement of the course. A deep level of anatomy and physiology underpinning knowledge is required to develop skill, knowledge and expertise therefore self discipline is essential. Success StoryThis is a new course which city college are offering because of the success of our students taking short media make courses and progressing to work in the industry or progressing to university or work as a freelance make -up artist. Each student is responsible for purchasing general stationery items including a USB memory stick and text books at approximately £30.
