About the CourseThis course will give you the opportunities to develop Barbering or update your skills. Course ContentThe course will cover units such as ensuring your own actions reduce risks to health and safety, give clients a positive impression of yourself and your organisation, advise and consult with clients, cut hair using basic techniques, shampoo and condition hair and scalp, style dress and finish hair using basic techniques, fulfill salon reception duties and provide scalp massage services. Entry RequirementsNVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing or equivalent is required for the practical side of this course. For the theory side of this course, a good standard of English is required, and students with English as a second language are required to have ESOL Level 1. This is necessary due to the course containing a high level of written evidence with assignments, written questions and test papers. It should be noted that a good standard of physical health is required as hairdressing is often physically demanding and is not suitable for some skin conditions. It would be an advantage to have a salon work experience placement within a hairdressing salon while you attend this course. Learning StyleThe necessary skills for this qualification will be learnt through a variety of situations, in a commercial salon and in theory lessons. Equipment RequirementsYou will need to purchase a Barbering kit costing approximately £48.00 which includes a gents barbering head block, clippers with attachments and a barbering comb. You will be required to wear a uniform during all practical classes. This consists of a black tunic (cost approx. £19.50), black trousers and black shoes or plain black trainers. You will be expected to find models for your practical assessments, who will be expected to contribute to the cost of consumables. You will also be required to purchase text books. Men's hairdressing traditional and modern barbering, second edition (By Maurice Lister SBN 1-86152-916-3) is required for this course. AssessmentWithin the course structure there are four areas of assessments, practical observation, oral questioning, assignments/Case studies, and two Written test papers. You will need to pass all four areas of assessment. Completion of all assessments will be retained in a portfolio and used as evidence to show the external examiner. ProgressionProgression routes include: > Afro-Caribbean hair > Barbering > Level 3 Hairdressing (via a trade test) > Working in a commercial salon > Working on a cruise ship > Mobile hairdresser Additional InformationIf you are on a qualifying means tested benefit, the tuition fees for some courses may be reduced. However, you will still need to pay Exam and College costs. You must claim tuition fee remission by providing evidence before enrolment. About the CourseThe Hairdressing industry is a diverse and varied career and rewarding job opportunities, whether this is in top leading salons, session stylist working back stage for catwalk and fashion shows across the world or travelling the globe aboard cruise liners.
As part of the fashion industry, individuals are required to have artistic flare, creative ambition and the determination to succeed.
This is a practical course, which is underpinned by a theoretical background. The necessary skills for this qualification will be learnt though a variety of situations, in a commercial salon and in theory lessons. You will work with your us to review your current skills and find the best way to gain new ones - perhaps by trying new things at work, or by studying.

Success StoryJanuary 2012. Jessica Young has been studying at City College after successfully completing her level 2 Diploma and NVQ L2 she has now progressed after securing employment as a Junior stylist, she continues to study NVQ L3 developing advanced skills to progress on her chosen career path.
During her time here with us at City College amongst her main qualifications she has also achieved additional qualifications in the following; Dermatitis, Employ-ability Award, Customer Services Award and Indian Head Massage. Theory lessons are taught through a variety of methods from classroom, independent study, online resources through our Visual Learning Environment VLE. Equipment RequirementsWe strive to source the best value kits for all our Hairdressing courses September 2012 prices were at £210.00. The kit itself contains everything you will need to embark on a career in hairdressing.There is a charge of £30.00 for consumables to be paid at the first session on the course. Due to health and Safety regulations all students are required to purchase and wear in all practical sessions a full uniform which consists of the following: Tunic, Trousers and closed toed shoes. Please note that these are purchased through the college suppliers to ensure a high standard of presentation in Kudos Hair and Beauty Salons. AssessmentTo get an NVQ, you need to show you've got a particular set of skills. You usually work with your training provider to review your current skills and find the best way to gain new ones - perhaps by trying new things at work, or by studying.
NVQs are assessed at work or in a realistic working environment. For each unit your assessor observes you carrying out different services and checks your understanding, this information will be recorded in your log book, which then provides formal evidence of your learning.
For a Hairdressing NVQ, you'll do hairdressing practice, learn the knowledge required and organise your own study - you'll record your achievements in a logbook packed with hints and tips from industry experts.
