About the Course

Have you always wanted to make your own felt bag or embroider your own piece of wall art? This course will cover the basics in felt making and hand and machine embroidery techniques.

Course Content

Using creative stitch and using a variety of materials, yarns, threads and including handmade felt learners will be encouraged to explore process and construction techniques, surface qualities and structures creating 2D and 3D outcomes that will be either functional or decorative.

In common with most art and design courses we make use a range of teaching methods, reviews of work, seminars and tutorials. In each session, in every class, tutors are present to guide and support your work and your ideas and help you progress and achieve. We want you to get into the habit of discussing, of debating, your own work and ideas and the work of others. Fostering and sharing a positive, supportive and open learning environment and culture  is very important to us and to your success on the course.

Equipment Requirements

All specialist equipment and materials will be provided by the College. It is suggested that students bring a sketchbook or notepad and some drawing equipment; this is to keep a record of any notes and may also be used to develop creative ideas.

There may be times when specific additional materials can be purchased; this will be discussed by your course tutor on your first session.

Assessment

There is no assessment attached, this course is designed for fun and pleasure. Your tutor will offer support and guidance throughout the course providing feedback to develop your skills.

Progression

The course acts as an initial step into the wide and expanding range of art and design activities and opportunities. For students the next step could be a course with a qualification attached, this could include an Award, Certificate or Subsidiary Diploma.  This could lead to a career (including where required further study at BA, MA and PhD level), in any area of art and design; graphic design, illustration, fine art, fashion, textiles, 3D design, interior design, animation, art history, digital media, curator-ship, art journalism, teaching etc. The scope for potential career destinations within the world of art and design is virtually unlimited.

The pottery course will enable you to explore and investigate various materials, techniques and processes connected with the production of creative ceramic forms. If you already possess knowledge in this field, the ceramic course will provide you with the opportunity to expand and extend your understanding.

Check out the Photography Students Work

This is aimed at intermediate to beginner level students with some photographic experience or ability, that own a compact or SLR  digital camera & those who wish to extend and develop their creative and technical knowledge by working more independently in their approach to image making through a structured program of study.

What Skills are taught?

You will be taught the basic camera operations and functions. Also a greater understanding of the various techniques involved in taking better photographs, along with improved knowledge of image composition and lighting. You will learn how to be creative and experimental with your images, develop previously acquired skills to a more sophisticated level.

Course Content

The course will initially cover the theory and practice of the basics of photography. Later further topics will be covered, that may include portraiture, landscape, wildlife, architecture, and still life. The main emphasis of the course is to develop and adapt ideas creatively, whilst improving your technical understanding of current (digital) and some past (film) technology.

Each week you will be given an optional task to carry out after the session. The task will be focused on the topic you will have covered in the session. This allows you to practice and embed new knowledge.

There is a basic Photoshop and Light room presentation included in the course. Please note that students wishing to learn how to manipulate images in more detail should consider looking specifically for Photoshop courses.

About the Course

The course is suitable for beginners to those with some experience. Everyone can draw; they just need guidance and technical knowledge. The tutor will guide you in the use of materials and media. You will be encouraged to develop your skills through observational drawing and experimenting with a variety of materials. The emphasis will be on enjoying your newly developed skills through a series of weekly workshops.

 On the course help will be given with materials and tools. You will work with materials such as pencils, charcoal, pastels, pen and ink, wax crayons and water based paints.
